Gill hands out notice to hockey coach

Press Trust Of India

New Delhi: The Indian Hockey Federation Chief K P S Gill on Friday put the national team's coach Vasudevan Baskaran on notice, saying that unsuccessful coaches could not be persisted for long.

While defending the frequent change of coaches of the Indian team, Gill underlined that success was the basic criteria of retaining coaches.

"We cannot persist with unsuccessful coaches. If they are successful, we will persist with them for a longer duration," he told a press conference on Friday.

The IHF has received a lot of flak after the forgettable 11th place finish of the team in the recently held World Cup at Monchengladbach, Germany, last month.

The performance of Baskaran has so far been a mixed bag. Under him, India finished third in a four-nation tournament in Germany and won the bronze in the eight-nation Azlan Shah meet in Kuala Lumpur before the debacle at the World Cup.

Baskaran, who has been appointed the coach for the third time, in most likelihood will be shown the door if the Indian team continued with its lacklustre performance in Doha Asian Games.
