New Delhi: A two-day-old baby girl has been rescued from a sandpit in Mehbubnagar in Andhra Pradesh, after she was allegedly buried alive.

Police say the baby's maternal grandparents tried to bury her alive. The baby's grandfather is reported to have told the police that he did it because he didn't want another girl child in the family.

He says that he already has seven daughters, five of them unmarried. The mother of the baby was also allegedly involved in the plot.

The infant's father was away in Maharashtra when the incident occurred. Her grandparents and uncle have been charged with attempt to murder.

The baby was saved by a local farmer, who saw her arm jutting out of the pit and is recovering at the Mahbubnagar district hospital now.

Doctors however, say that they are surprised at how the baby managed to survive considering she was buried in the sandpit for almost four hours.
