New Delhi: Monika Dagar and Gaurav Saini married against their parents' wishes in July 2009. But three months later 21-year-old Monika was found dead under mysterious circumstances while 25-year-old Gaurav is caught in a legal wrangle.

The two belonged to different castes and got married on July 6, 2009.

Their families were against the marriage and now three months later, Monika has been found dead.

"We met online and then decided to get married," said Gaurav.

Trouble began a day before they were to get married as on July 5, Monika's family filed a complaint of kidnapping against Gaurav at the Sahibabad police station.

On July 12, Monika's custody was handed over to her parents while Gaurav was arrested and lodged in Dasna Jail.

Two days later Monika's statement was recorded in front of a magistrate where she said that she married Gaurav of her own will

Gaurav was granted bail by a Ghaziabad court on August 11, 32 days after he was arrested,

Gaurav then approached the Delhi High Court, which directed the couple to appear for a hearing on October 7.

The Delhi High Court also directed Delhi and Uttar Pradesh police force to ensure the couple's safety. But on September 17, Monika's parents claimed that she died of a stomach infection.

"At around 8.30, mother came out of her room crying. Monika had died. We then cremated her," said Monika's brother Nitin Kumar.

Monika was cremated the next day on September and no post-mortem was conducted.

The family didn't inform either Gaurav or the police. News of her death came out only days back. As Gaurav deals with the trauma many questions still remain.

Why did Monika's family hide her death? Why did Gaurav have to spend 32 days in jail? Is this a case of honour killing?
