Lakhimpur: The family of the 14-year-old teenage girl who was found hanging from a tree inside the premises of Nighasan Police Station in Lakhimpur, Uttar Pradesh, is shattered. They allege that she was raped by several policemen and murdered after she strayed into the Police Station premises while tending to cattle.
Her mother said, "I saw that two policemen came out and threw her body outside."
Eleven police officers and constables, including the SHO, who were at the police station at that time have been suspended. But the UP police now cite postmortem reports to claim the girl was not murdered.
Lakhimpur Kheri SP DK Rai said, "The postmortem report mentioned asphyxia, as a result of hanging, the cause of death which rules out the allegation of murder."
But the claim doesn't have many takers. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is sending a team too investigate. Other agencies have openly hit out against the State police.
So is it a case of the police trying to cover up a crime they themselves committed. Only an independent probe can find the truth.
