New Delhi: Depressed by her poor performance in studies, a 15-year-old school girl allegedly immolated herself in a classroom of a private school in Madurai.
P T Divya brought kerosene in a plastic bottle, doused herself with it and set herself ablaze at Capron Hall Higher Secondary School on Sunday, police said.
There were no other students in the school when the incident occurred, they said. Initial investigations revealed she was depressed by her performance in studies, police said.
In a suicide note, Divya said her parents, friends or any one else was not responsible for her death and that she had taken the decision in her senses, they said. Hearing her cries, girls in a nearby hostel had rushed to the spot and tried in vain to put out the flames.
"We think it is a suicide. We don't see any foul play," a senior police official was quoted by PTI.
Divya had failed in three subjects in the quarterly examinations and had reportedly cursed herself frequently while talking to her friends. District administration officials visited the school and Divya's body was handed over to her family.
