Rohtak (Haryana): A 19-year-old girl and her partner have reportedly confessed to killing her mother, father and brother and in all seven members of her family because they opposed her marriage to a boy from the same clan.
The girl, Sonam and her lover both have confessed their crime," said Superintendent of Police, Rohtak, AK Rao.
On September 15 when Sonam's grandfather Taqdir Singh came to his son's home. He found the dead bodies of his son, Surinder, his wife Bhuri Devi, Sonam's mother Promila, brother Arvind and three cousins. All the bodies had strangulation marks.
Sonam was the only one who seemed to have escaped, what appeared to be a robbery cum murder.
"Poison was mixed in the food which the family consumed. Then they were strangulated and were tried to pass off as a robbery case," said Rao.
Sonam was initially admitted in a hospital, after she claimed she had been poisoned. But her alibi soon started to unravel. Police say Sonam planned the brutal fratricide because her family was opposed to her affair with Naveen Kumar.
Naveen was from her same gotra or clan, an act many view as incest in parts of Haryana.
