Girl protects honour with her father's rifle

New Delhi: Manpreet Kaur is now fondly called the new-age ‘Jhansi ki Rani’ by the villagers of Barnala.

They are proud that unlike other girls her age, this college-going teenager confronted an eve-teaser who had been bothering her since the past few days.

Manpreet recounts how she fended off the man.

“I fired thrice outside his house, he fled,” she said, brandishing a rifle.

When she was a child, Manpreet's father taught her how to use a rifle. Today, she used it to protect her honour and become a real-life heroine.

“She has made me proud, she has made our community proud,” said Manpreet’s mother, Kuldeep Kaur.

Manpreet says that had she had it completely her way, the situation could have gone terribly wrong.

“I had gone there fully prepared to murder him; he ran away or I would have killed him,” she states matter-of-factly. “My intention was to kill him.”

Although Manpreet's courage is quite an inspiration for girls in her village, their elders still remind them of the importance of not taking the law into their own hands.
