Mumbai girl with flu symptoms quarantined

Mumbai: Maharashtra health authorities have quarantined a 12-year-old girl who arrived from Thailand with symptoms of swine flu in Mumbai on Monday, an official said.

"The girl arrived in Mumbai on Monday afternoon from Thailand with her family and she was found to be suffering from fever and cough. As a precautionary measure, we have quarantined her," Maharashtra Influenza Control Programme's Nodal Officer, Uddhav Gawande, said on Monday evening.

The medical test reports of the girl are expected by Tuesday evening after which further steps will be taken, he said.

The girl, who hails from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, has been isolated in a ward in the Kasturba Hospital.

The state has so far tested 22 people suspected to be infected with the dreaded influenza A (H1N1) virus, but all have tested negative.

Gawande said chances of the girl suffering from swine flu are remote since she arrived from Thailand which is not a high-risk country as far as this disease is concerned.

"However, we are taking all necessary precautions in the matter," he added.
