Girl's limbs chopped for resisting gangrape

CNN-IBN

Fatehpur: In a horrendous incident in Uttar Pradesh, a Dalit girl paid a heavy price for fighting off some men who were allegedly trying to rape her.

The men allegedly chopped off her arms and legs. The gruesome incident took place in Fatehpur on Saturday. The girl said that she was attacked by an axe.

The police claims the attack was orchestrated by a man named Harishankar who has a running fued with the girls family.

The victim is in a critical condition and is being taken to Kanpur for further medical treatment. "When they started harassing, I tried to run away, but could not. They attacked me with axes," said the victim.

According to some reports, the ghastly incident was the result of an ongoing feud between the victim’s and assailants’ families.

Police have arrested one of the suspects but three others are still at large.

"One girl was let off. The other's limbs were chopped off," Fatehpur SP said.

The attack comes on the heels of a recent controversy sorrounding a BSP MLA from Banda, accused by a Dalit girl of abduction and repeated rape. For chief minister Mayawati - facing elections early next year - such incidents could be politically damaging. Especially when she builds her entire electoral campaign on two issues - social justice and a better law and order.
