New Delhi/ Panchkula: The father of a teenaged tennis player, who was molested by a senior police officer and later committed suicide, on Thursday came out of hiding and claimed former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala and other politicians had shielded the accused.
S C Girhotra, father of teenaged Ruchika Girhotra, alleged former Haryana director general of police (DGP) S P S Rathore had hounded his family for years.
Ruchika, 14, committed suicide three years after she was allegedly molested by Rathore, on August 12, 1990.
"Chautala was the main person behind him (Rathore). Even after R R Singh (the then Haryana DGP in 1990) gave his report recommending registration of a case against Rathore, the government took no action," Girhotra said.
"My daughter was molested, harassed and driven to death. My son Ashu was tormented and false cases were filed against him. All these cases were quashed by various courts. We were harassed at every stage."
"No girl in this country should go through what my daughter went through. She was driven to death by Rathore," said Girhotra while weeping.
Girhotra was speaking at the Panchkula house of Anand and Madhu Prakash, the couple who have been fighting a court case for Ruchika for 19 years.
He said his family was "still terrified" and sought security. “We were harassed and threatened. But now the whole country is behind us. I think they will not do any foul play now."
Rathore was on Monday convicted by a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special court in Chandigarh and sentenced to six months' imprisonment and a fine of only Rs 1,000. He was got bail the same day and didn’t have to go to prison.
Chautala, chief of the Indian National Lok Dal, on Thursday denied Girhotra's allegations and claimed his government removed Rathore as DGP after he was charged in courts with molestation.
