Mumbai: Thirty-five-year-old Bheema Shinde is paralysed below the waist and lives a lonely life on the streets of Panvel. Destitute and without hope, there seemed to be no end to the misery in Bheema's life, that is till he met K M Philip.
Philip is a resident of Panvel runs a home for destitutes called SEAL and he has transferred Bheema there.
A quick shave and a proper bath and Bheema is ready with his new look and a new life.
"It feels good to be picked up and given proper care and treatment," says Bheema. "Their love really transforms you. You feel great after a few days of care," he adds.
However, Philip's work is not without its problems. Quite a few of his inmates cannot resist the lure of the street and go back, but Philip is undeterred.
He started SEAL eight years ago with just two inmates. He now has 72 people residing in the shelter homes that he has built, including 35 children, many of them suffering from AIDS.
So where does he get the inspiration for his work from? His answer is simple - from the Almighty Lord.
"Since God has been kind enough to give us education, money and influence, we should provide part of it to the society," says Philip.
Philip believes that the only way to bring about a change in the lives of destitutes is by providing them education and all round development, be it in studies, games or any other activity.
His next goal is to start a school and hospital for destitutes so that they can take a shot at rejoining mainstream society.
