Delhites get respite from fog, but not winter

New Delhi: High on the chill factor and low on fog, it’s been a rather unusual winter across north India. While frequent fliers aren’t complaining, Delhites are braving the dipping temperature.

V Sadanad, a marketing professional, has been travelling to Delhi twice every month for the last seven years. Used to nightmarish delays at the Delhi Airport, he says this year has been markedly different.

"This year has been a lot less inconvenient in comparison to the last year," Sadanad says.

For fog to be formed, low temperature, high moisture content in the atmosphere, along with wind speed and direction have to achieve a certain critical point.

"This year of the three conditions, wind speed was totally unfavourable for fog formation," Director MET Department BP Yadav explains.

This winter only 300 flights outgoing flights have been delayed from Delhi. The figures for the same time period last year, when the airport was fogged almost every other day, are at least six times higher.

This winter has been the most unusual one of the last decade. Even as fog has hit Delhi only once this winter, there have been massive fluctuations in the minimum temperature recorded.

On January 2, when Delhi recorded a min of 1.9 degrees, the fluctuation was 5 degrees from the normal. On January 14, when the minimum temperature recorded was 14 degrees, the fluctuation was 6 degrees from the normal.

And so even as people flying into the city, and out of it, are happy, the famous Delhi chill isn’t exactly being kind to those living in the city.
