Golf: Glamour quotient, corporate interest up

New Delhi: Riya Sen launched the seventh edition of the Signature Club Golf Championship at the Delhi Golf Club.

Golf as a sport in India is gaining momentum, with a 10-15 per cent rise in amatuers every year. And with more and more corporate backing, even the glamour quotient is rising.

Actor Riya Sen says, "My sister and me tried to learn golf but we flopped at it very badly. But apart from that I think every sport needs some sort of a glamour quotient in it so I guess that is my contribution to this."

Considering amateaur golf is the stepping stone to be a professional, interest even amongst the non-golfers has started refelecting through India's increasing talent pool.

Golfer Saurabh Bahuguna says, "The fact that 4,500 golfers play across the country across 21 golf clubs, 22 cities - this length and breadth enables us a huge breach across premium consumers."

Another golfer Debashish adds, "If you see in the last 4-5 years, amateur torunaments have given a lot of pros like Shiv Kapur, Himmant Rai and Anirban Lahiri."

Chances of earning a living out of golf were never so bright for Indian amateur golfers and with more tournaments like the Club Golf Championship coming up in the future, things can only get better for Indian golfers.
