New Delhi: The year 2008 has been recorded as the 10th warmest year in the past 150 years, cause being global warming. The global mean temperature this year according to the world meteorological organization is 14.3 degree centigrade, making it one of the warmest years since 1850.
This year saw Australia battle its worst drought in a 100 years and west coast America ravaged by massive forest fires. India saw untimely rains and then a spate of deadly floods. Most blame this growing incidence of unpredictable weather on rising global temperatures.
However, what is more disquieting is that, the 10 warmest years on record have all occurred since 1997. Many scientists have laid the blame on an unprecedented increase in green house gas emissions in the atmosphere- driven by deforestation and unmitigated use of fossil fuels.
According to the WMD, Global average temperatures on Wednesday are two degrees higher than the last decade.
This isn't research rhetoric, everyone has been solwly but surely feeling the heat with untimely seasons, heavier rains, volatile fuel prices and in the future this could get worse- with entire islands disappearing and millions of climate refugees.
With rare exceptions, studies report that climate change will cause harsher droughts, heavier floods and recurrent storms in the subcontinent.
The Intergovernmental panel on climate change has already stated that if emissions continue at today's levels then global temperatures by 2050 could be higher by three to five degrees.
So even as global talks in Poland, to thrash a climate treaty to cut emissions seem to have dithered, here's more grim evidence underlining the need to find a solution sooner.
