Istanbul: GMR has become the first Indian company to build an airport outside India in a record time frame of 18 months. GMR claims their job at the brand new Sabiha Gokchen airport is a world record in terms of time required for execution.
Twice the size of the new Hyderabad airport, three and a half times that of Bangalore airport, Istanbul's Sabiha Gokcen Airport had hired three members on its builders consortium and one among the three was an Indian company GMR.
The Chairman of GMR Group, GM Rao said, "We worked together very well."
The airport has a four level car park for 4700 cars, a 128-room hotel and even an exclusive VIP terminal. Being built on an earthquake zone, the airport is built to withstand Zone 5 seismic activity, which is the highest risk zone.
It was the Turkish Prime Minister himself who refused to break ground during the foundation laying ceromony without getting a promise from the consortium to complete it in 18 months.
GMR is now the first Indian company to successfully complete an airport project abroad. They are now looking for opportinities in other countries.
