Kolkata: It’s the wedding season and trousseau shoppers are flocking to Kolkata, with an aim to pick up that well priced, but exclusive piece for the big day.
Indeed, a large part of second rung designers in Kolkata have become the first choice for wedding shoppers from across the country.
"The good workmanship and also the competitive prices. Kolkata offers good stuff for much less. For instance in Rs 40,000 youwould get a simple sari in Mumbai or Delhi. But in Kolkata you'll get a heavy sari in that amount,” says designer Nandita Thirani.
In fact, the price tags reveal that the same kind of outfits would cost the buyer at least three times more in Mumbai or Delhi. But designers claim that it's not just the smart pricing that's drawing clients. The workmanship is also better in the city.
"Shoppers come here looking for the Bengali touch which is traditional and more subtle than what they get in stores in Delhi and Mumbai,” says designer Jyoti Khaitan.
Designers say that out-station wedding shoppers contribute around 30 per cent of their annual revenue, a figure that is on the rise. So it’s high time you plan your shop-till-you-drop trip to Kolkata.
