New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday asked Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to approach the Cauvery River Authority headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to resolve their dispute over the sharing of the river's water. The apex court bench of Justice D K Jain and Justice Madan B Lokur said this while declining to interfere with Cauvery River Monitoring Authority's report which on Dec 7 directed Karnataka to release 12,000 million cubic feet of water to Tamil Nadu this month.

The monitoring authority met on Dec 5 on the direction to the apex court to decide on the volume of water that Karnataka should release to Tamil Nadu. The apex court asked Karnataka to release 10,000 cusecs of water daily for the next five days, ending on Dec 9.

As Tamil Nadu on Monday sought to assail the monitoring authority's order for not being based on factual position, the court said that it was not an expert on the matter.
