Goa: ‘Bikini killer’ Charles Sobhraj, convicted of murdering an American woman in Kathmandu in 1975, on Wednesday failed to get any reprieve from Nepal's Supreme Court which ruled that the status quo will be maintained in the matter.

Sobhraj, who was caught on April 6, 1986 in the O'Coqueiro Restaurant in Goa after a dramatic escape from the Tihar Jail, had chosen to hide in the tourist paradise in the hope of getting lost in the international crowd but his luck ran out a month later.

Chef of O'Coqueiro, Peter Fernandes, clearly remembers the dramatic day.

“On April 6, 1986 we were celebrating a wedding. That's when Sobhraj and his friend walked in and that's when the CID inspector Madhukar Zende caught him. We helped get some rope to tie him up and they took him to Bombay,” Fernandes said.

A stone statue of Sobhraj at the O'Coqueiro is a constant reminder of the incident. The statue is placed on the table on which he was caught, frozen in time, complete with a menu card in hand. It's an installation that's been generating a lot of interest.

“We put up this statue because the moment people would mention O'Coqueiro they would say ‘oh! that's the place Sobhraj was caught’. It was put up in 2004,” O'Coqueiro’s Manager Shailesh Sanzgiri said.

And so the statue is dusted and cleaned everyday, in remembrance of the day the criminal who'd given the police many a slip was finally caught and taken away.
