Goa CM to monitor rape case personally

Panaji: Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, after being pulled up by the Centre and drawing the Russian Ambassador to India Alexander M Kadakin's ire over the rape of a nine-year-old Russian girl, has promised to personally monitor the investigation.

"Whenever any such incident has taken place government machinery has swung into action and immediately tried to nab the culprit. In fact in the last case wherein the accused were given anticipatory bail, government went and appealed to the High Court, got the appeal cancelled and ultimately arrested the accused. Goa is still a safe place for tourists. Even in this case I am personally monitoring the case," Kamat told CNN-IBN on Thursday.

Kamat's statement came on the day Goa Police released the picture of the accused and are still on the lookout for him and his accomplice.

According to Goa Police the accused raped the nine-year-old Russian girl at Arambol beach, 35 kms from Panaji, while his accomplice chatted up with her mother just yards away.

The accused has been identified as Aman Bharadwaj from Uttar Pradesh, who has been working for a local pharma firm

"The photograph makes all the difference and we appeal to the people, if you see this person they should inform the nearest police station," appealed North Goa Superintendent of Police Bosco George.

But Goa Police are still unable to track down the two alleged rapists.

But that hasn't stopped the politics over the rape case.

The NCP has attacked senior coalition partner Congress, saying that its minister should resign if they can't handle their portfolio.

But the real target was Kamath. It was almost like retaliation against the Congress blaming NCP chief and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar for rising food prices. The Centre, too, pulled up the Goa government.

The police are now searching guest houses and circulating the picture of the accused at railway stations and border posts.

They have also tightened security at beaches along its 105-km long coastline.
