Sonia steps in for damage control in Goa

New Delhi: Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat arrived in New Delhi on Friday morning even as the political crisis in his state continues. The immediate threat to his government though has been put off, as the state Assembly stands prorogued.

Kamat will hold consultations with Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Friday evening.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel will also meet Congress leaders in Delhi to try and resolve the issue.

"It is a big crisis. Several MLA'S have a problem with the functioning of the government," Patel said and hoped that the issue will be resolved soon.

"Hopefully we will resolve the issue by today evening. The Goa government is listening to us," he said.

"They didn't take NCP high command permission before resigning. But they are part of our family. We are trying to negotiate with them. I hope that this issue will be resolved soon," Patel said about the revolt by three NCP MLAs.

NCP's Mickey Pacheco, Jose Philip and Nilkanth Halarnkar, and independent Vishwajeet Rane reportedly have some differences with the Kamat government over the proposed Rajiv Gandhi IT Habitat and on Wednesday all the four MLAs had withdrawn support to the Congress-led seven-month-old coalition government.

The three rebel NCP MLAs have not come to Delhi and will not attend the meeting that Patel will hold with Congress leaders.

According to sources scrapping of SEZs could be the immediate cause that triggered the crisis.

On the other hand Kamat blamed the Opposition led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of trying to topple his government.

"BJP is instigating NCP and our MLAs to topple the government," Kamat said.

Meanwhile, sources say two Congress legislators Shyam Satardekar and Gurudas Gawas, who are also not happy with the government’s SEZ policy, could still resign.

Kamat now enjoys the support of just 16 members of the Congress and two of the Save Goa Front in a house of 40.

Following the crisis Goa Governor SC Jamir is likely to put the state Assembly in suspended animation.
