New Delhi: The Goa government has decided not to allow foreigners to buy land in the state and the Land Registry Authority will be given powers not to accept applications from foreigners.
Earlier a foreigner, who held a business visa and completed a stay of 182 days in a financial year in Goa, was allowed to procure land.
The Finance Minister of Goa, Dayanand Narvekar, announced the decision on Thursday.
"The policy of the government is to stop sale of land to foreigners," Narvekar said.
Narvekar said an amendment will be made in the Goa Land Registration Act to stop foreigners from buying land in the state.
Even the registrar didn't had the power of rejecting an application for the purchase of land but bow it has been given the power of rejecting the application of a foreigner.
The decision comes after farmers in south Goa protested against the sale of 'agricultural land' to a foreigner for building a resort.
More than 350 land sales registered were found to have violated Foreign Exchange Management Regulations. The government has also initiated an enquiry to look into all the 482 land sales recorded since 1999.
