Panaji (Goa): With the Digamber Kamat-led Congress government on the verge of collapse in Goa, Opposition leader Manohar Parrikar is all set to stake claim to form government.

BJP-led formation said they will approach Governor S C Jamir at Raj Bhavan on Thursday afternoon.

"We will stake the claim before the Governor. If he does not give us a chance, we will defeat the government on the floor of the House," Parrikar said.

"The Govenor has to abide by the Constitution. Maharashtrawadi Gomantak party (MGP) has withdrawn the support while a woman Congress legislator Victoria Fernandes has resigned reducing the Congress-led formation to minority," Parrikar said.

Kamat’s two-month-old government was reduced to a minority after two MLAs each from the Congress and the MGP and an Independent MLA resigned, reducing their strength to just 17 in a 40-strong assembly.

The Congress-NCP government had a wafer-thin support of 23 MLAs in the 40-member Assembly. The Congress had 16 MLAs and the NCP three MLAs.

Two Independents and two MGP MLAs supported the government. The government has now the support of just 16 MLAs.

The political alliance led by the BJP and supported by the Maharashtra Gomantak Party, Save Goa Front, United Goans Democratic Party and an Independent MLA will stake the claim to form the next government. The BJP has 14 MLAs in the Assembly.

Parrikar has denied that the BJP is encouraging defections in the state. "Victoria (Fernandes) has resigned because she was humiliated by the party. We have not taken support of any other Congress legislator," PTI reported him as saying.
