Goa rape: 2nd minister's kin under scanner

New Delhi: There has been a new twist in the rape case of the German girl in Goa. Earlier, the police had accused the son of Education Minister Babush Monserrate, Rohit for rape.

Now, they have named Goa PWD Minister Churchill Ulemao's nephew Warren Ulemao as a co-accused in the case and have registered a case of sexual abuse against him.

The German minor's mother lodged a formal complaint with the Superintendent of Police's office in North Goa on Friday. The girl's mother said she and her daughter were receiving threatening calls after they decided to go ahead with the case.

The German girl's lawyer, social activist Aires Rodrigues' says he has a photograph showing Warren with the girl in a compromising position. In fact Aires claims Churchill Ulemao had spoken of his nephew's involvement in a conversation over the phone. Aires says he has passed on this information to the police.

Meanwhile, the minister's nephew says he's innocent and is planning on filing a defamation case against the victim's mother and her lawyer. Churchill Ulemao on his part has been stoutly defending Babush Monserrate and Rohit, saying they are mere victims of politics.

In a related development, the police have claimed a breakthrough in Aires Rodrigues' attack case. A total of 11 people have been arrested and more arrests are possible.

Rodrigues, who was brutally assaulted by a group of people, claimed that Babush Monserratte was behind the attack. Monserrate, however, has refuted the charge.
