New Delhi: The Goa police have arrested one man in connection with the murder of 15-year old British teenager Scarlette Keeling.

The accused, a bar tender at the Anjuna beach where Scarlett's body was found last month, was among the three people detained by the police for questioning. He has been charged with rape. However, the two others have been let off after interrogation.

“It is a definite case of murder. The same person we charged for rape can be charged for murder. He was the last person seen in a compromising position with the girl and the police has got enough evidence to book this man,” says IGP, Goa, Kishan Kumar.

He adds that as the investigations proceed, more arrests are possible.

The arrest on Sunday came a day after Scarlett's second autopsy suggested she could have been murdered. However sources at the Goa Medical College told CNN-IBN that they had asked the police to investigate the circumstances that lead to Scarlette's death earlier too. The second autopsy was done after Scarlett's mother Fiona MacKeown accused the Goa police of a cover-up. For her, this is just the beginning of a battle for justice.

“I will stay here as long as it takes...the police should have taken action long time back,” says Fiona MacKeown.

Goa's tourism minister however is looking forward to the dismissal of the careless cops, as he believes that the way the police authorities handled the case is tainting Goa’s image.

“The concerned police officer Alber, was trying to hush up this incident and because of his negligence, this issue has puffed up. Without any report he went to the press and said it was a drowning case. This is wrong. We will dismiss him,” says Mickey Pachkeo.

He adds, “This is the second time he has done this. I have a meeting tomorrow with the home minister and concerned officers to take action against the areas where the name of Goa is being spoilt in tourism. The concerned people will be arrested if not today then tomorrow.”

Apart from the three questioned on Sunday, the police have four others in their ring of suspicion, who are also likely to be questioned by the Goa police.
