Godhra: Nine years after coach number six of the Sabarmati Express went up in flames killing 59 people. Sixty three people have been acquitted including Maulana Umarjee. He is accused of being the mastermind behind the train burning. In Godhra, his son Saeed said the courts have finally delivered justice to his father.
Saeed Umarji said, "The police created the evidence and they never wanted the real story to come out."
Naseem Banu's husband, Siraj Maida has also been let off by the Gujarat High Court. Their six-year-old son Aamir was born just six months after Maida was arrested in 2005.
Banu said, "I am happy all the innocent have been freed. My husband was in jail and I always knew he was innocent."
Three years ago we met the families of two men who were also picked up by the police for the burning of the Sabarmati Express - who on Tuesday were acquitted.
Ishaq Mumdu was among the 134 people accused of burning the train. But Ishaq Mumdu was totally blind - this certificate issued by the Gujarat government says as much. The chargesheet against Mumdu could not state clearly how he had managed to reach Godhra station.
Ishaq's brother Sabeer Mamdu said, "This certificate is 100 per cent true. He cannot go anywhere alone."
Inayat Juzar, was another man who was put behind bars. His son says Inayat was at his desk at Godhra's PWD office at the time of the incident. Even affidavits from Inayat's colleagues confirming he was at work, did not help back then when he was arrested.
Today the question many are asking is how will the men be compensated for the years they spent behind bars.
Nine years on this may be a kind of closure for families who believed their men were innocent but the years lost behind bars…will remain just that - lost.
