New Delhi: When the Congress didn't project Tarun Gogoi as its chief Ministerial candidate in Assam prior to the Assembly elections, political observors felt it was the end of the road for him.

But the 70-year-old Congressman proved otherwise. Gogoi led the Congress to victory and remained the strongest contender for the post of Chief Minister, adding a new chapter to his illustrious political career spanning 38 years.

Tarun Gogoi plunged into politics in 1968, when he was elected to Jorhat Municipal Board.

By then he had established himself as a capable youth leader, and for the better part of his political career since the 70s, he was a Parliamentarian and a Union Minister.

Gogoi was spotted by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who made his entry into Congress easier.

For the first time, Gogoi entered Lok Sabha in 1971 and thereafter returned to Parliament five times and served as Union minister twice.

His return to state politics in 1996 came as a surprise. He was elected President of Assam Congress Party and subsequently to the Legislative Assembly in 1996.

In 2001, he led Congress to a thumping victory and became the Chief Minister.

In the last five years, Gogoi tried his best to convince the Bodo & ULFA insurgents to return to the negotiating table and managed to achieve some success.
