New Delhi: The Group of Ministers (GoM) which is overseeing the sealing of unauthorised shops in Delhi on Thursday said the campaign will not be resumed till Monday.
This goes against a Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee's order that sealing of shops in residential areas must begin on Friday.
"It is difficult to conduct sealing in the Capital under the given circumstances," said Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy after a meeting of the GoM.
He said the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) MCD and the Delhi Police had advised the GoM that the Capital is tense and resuming the sealing campaign is not feasible till Monday.
General Secretary of the All India Traders Association said that the traders were happy with GOM's decision and hoped that the Supreme Court C will give a favourable decision on Monday.
The MCD will approach the Supreme Court on Friday and apprise it of the difficulties on the ground in carrying out sealing in the present tense situation, Reddy said.
However, he remained non-committal on whether the sealing drive will resume from Friday, saying, "you can draw your own inference from what I have said."
He said the monitoring committee has written to the MCD to resume the sealing operations from Friday, but added that the civic body will approach the apex court to apprise it of the difficulties that will be encountered in the present scenario while carrying out the drive.
The GoM, chaired by Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, was told by the police that the situation in the Capital continued to be tense and it would be difficult to carry out sealing for the time being.
Asked whether the Government was heading towards a confrontation with the judiciary by not carrying out the court-ordered sealing drive, Reddy said "We want to obey the court orders, but the Government has its own difficulties, which we will tell the court about." "We will wait for the Supreme Court's directions," he said.
