Chennai: Good overnight rains in Chennai and its suburbs brought cheers to residents, giving respite from sweltering heat over the the past few days. The overnight showers also inundated low-lying areas in some parts of the city and suburban areas but the rains brought much relief from the hot and humid conditions.
Describing the rainfall pattern as "convective rains," S R Ramanan, Director, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, said the showers were confined to Chennai and its suburbs. Rainfall was likely to occur in one or two places in the next 24 hours, he said.
Meanwhile, the combined water levels at four reservoirs supplying drinking water to the city stood at 3,655 million cubic feet (mcft) as against the full capacity of 11,057 mcft, Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board said. The storage was 5,496 mcft on the same day last year, it added.
