Google's Nexus 7 tablet goes on sale in India from Thursday at Rs 19,999

New Delhi: Google's first venture into the burgeoning tablet market, the Nexus 7, is making its official debut in Indian stores on Thursday, November 8 at a price of Rs 19,999 for the 16GB WiFi version.

Though many online retailers, including HomeShop18, have been selling the Nexus 7 in India, the device had not been made officially available in the country by Asus which manufactures the tablet in collaboration with Google.

The Nexus 7 that will be available in India isn't the beefed up Android 4.2 version but the older 16GB version that runs Android 4.1. The tablet, that has received rave reviews, will be available at Croma outlets across India.

  Google unveiled the 7-inch Nexus 7 tablet at its fifth annual Google I/O developers conference. The tablet is manufactured by Taiwan's AsusTek Computer.

  It will run the next version of Google's Android operating system, called Jelly Bean. The tablet will cost $199 for 8 gigabytes of storage, $249 for 16 GB.

  The tablet features a 7-inch screen with a resolution of 1280x800 pixels.

• 

  It is powered by a Tegra 3 quad-core CPU and 12-core GPU.

• 

  The Nexus 7 tablet offers up to 9 hours of HD video playback and 300 hours of standby.

• 

  The tablet weighs 340 grams. The shipments will begin mid July.

• 

  It is very likely to challenge Amazon.com's Kindle Fire than Apple's popular iPad, which has a display that measures nearly 10 inches diagonally.

  The device also has a 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera. Connectivity options include NFC, Bluetooth and WiFi.

  Besides, Google Play will now offer movies for sale, rather than only rentals. It has also added TV shows and magazines to its Play offering.

  Customers can start ordering it through Google, initially in the US, Canada and Australia.

  "Nexus 7 is an ideal device for reading books. The form factor and weight are just right," said Chris Yerga, Google director of engineering for Android.

The Asus-manufactured Google Nexus 7 tablet will be available at Croma outlets.
