New Delhi: Houses in the Capital's prime locations, cars equipped with red lights and sirens, entertainment, curtains and even carpet allowances - these are just some of the perks enjoyed by the members of India's babudom.
And none of this is counted as part of the Babu's salary. Not yet, that is. But the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission may soon change all that.
CNN-IBN has learnt that the commission wants the sarkari babus (Government employees) to know that the Government is spending a lot on them. So don't go just by the basic salary.
- A proposal has been made before the Government to put all their empolyees on a cost to company system.
- This means the salary is not simply the money that is paid to the employee at the end of the month.
- So if a bureaucrat gets Rs 50,000 per month, perks such as a bungalows, telephone bills, cars, chauffers and other benefits could push up the salary figure to up to Rs 1.5 lakh
Says Jharkhand Election Observer, S Tathagathy, "Whatever the Government does is for the good of it's employees."
It's a common perception that the Government pays less than the corporate sector and it's this perception that the Sixth Pay Commission will try to fix. In doing so, it will send out the message that Government jobs are as lucrative as private ones.
But some are not buying this logic and say that this fact is well known. Says Election Commissioner, S Y Quraishi, "There is nothing new in this. This has been happening for a long time."
If these proposals are indeed accepted, then the familiar woes of top civil servants will not be acceptable anymore - at least on paper.
