Govt will spend more on social sector: Montek

Union Budget will be presented by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in Parliament on July 6.

Commenting on the Budget Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said that the government will focus on pro-investment plans and disinvestment.

"Government money is more likely to be spent in pursuit of social sector objectives like health, education, infrastructure particularly in backward areas," Montek told CNN-IBN in an exclusive interview in New York.

"Disinvestment like we have already said is a declared policy and I am glad that the survey is emphasising it. I hope that we will soon have a medium term programme for disinvestment. Government equity will remain 51 per cent but they will disinvest the rest," said Montek.

"Tax reform is extremely important part of the agenda," he added.

"The government's declared position is that we want to raise the limit form 26 per cent to 49 per cent. I mean it has be a change in the law. The legislation is already there and hopefully we will be able to get approval in Parliament," said Planning Commission Deputy Chairman.
