Mumbai: The star appeal of the actor-turned politician Govinda served the Congress well when it gave him the Mumbai North ticket last elections. But despite showing devotion to the party, Govinda finds himself without a ticket this elections.
“We wanted to accommodate Govinda also but he himself said he doesn’t want to contest this time,” says Maharashtra Chief Minister, Ashok Chavan.
Govinda's five-year tenure as MP was fraught with controversies.
He was caught on camera with Dawood, members of his constituency registered missing complaints against him, the actor barely attended 10 per cent of the Parliament sessions and hardly opened his mouth in the Parliament.
“It was also an experiment,” says Govinda.
Now it seems the people in Mumbai too want to see him only on their TV sets and not in Parliament.
The actor has also taken the rejection with grace. He has said he will continue to campaign for the party and even support good friend and Samajwadi Party candidate Sanjay Dutt if needed.
“If he (Sanjay Dutt) calls me, I will go and support him,” says Govinda.
Though Govinda has bowed out saying he has yet to learn a lot about politics, it seems neither the party nor the janta (public) is interested in giving him another chance.
