Govinda, once Bollywood's Hero No 1, is now back to attempt a second innings after a five-year hiatus from tinsel town. "I've worked hard and am back after suffering a lot," says Govinda.
For years, Govinda was regarded as Hindi cinema's best comic talent. He struck up a sure-shot winning formula with director David Dhawan, with whom he delivered a string of successes in the early '90s.
In the coming months, Govinda will be seen in as many as four new films, the first of which will be Priyadarshan's Bhagam Bhag.
Bhagam Bhag, which is to be his comeback vehicle, will hit the screens next week. The film is a comedy, but with director Priyadarshan at the helm of affairs, it sure made for a rather unfamiliar territory for the actor.
"It took time as his (Priyadarshan's) style is different. The film is a situational comedy with strong actors. It meant a lot of hard work," says Govinda.
The interim years may have been spent realising his political ambitions, but for Govinda, a return to his first love was imminent.
The actor has no qualms admitting that he went out seeking work himself, and friends like Salman Khan, David Dhawan, Sunil Shetty and Akshay Kumar happily brought him into the fold again.
"I am such a star who was brought back to stardom by stars themselves. When they saw that a star was in troble, they all teamed up to help," says Govinda.
After Bhagam Bhaag, he'll return to the screen in Salaam-e-Ishq, and then David Dhawan's Partner.
As the buzz would have it, Govinda has cleaned up his act—no longer does he make the unit wait hours before he turns up on the set, and no longer does he take an entourage of a dozen people to outdoor shoots.
So, is he back in the rat race, then? "Somebody who's sincere is never a part of a rat race," says Govinda.
