Rajasthan rape case: Govt assures justice

Jaipur: When Malli Devi, the victim of alleged rape by former Rajasthan DIG Madhukar Tandon, determined to take her fight for justice forward sat on a protest near the Rajasthan Chief Minister's house demanding help, she had no idea of what was in store.

At 1:30 in the morning of Wednesday, the police hauled the protesters along with the victim, her husband and Dausa MP Kirori Lal Meena into buses and took them away.

While Meena and fourteen others have been arrested for disrupting peace, followed by road blockades in Dausa, the victim and her husband were detained through the night and let off only in the morning.

The victim's husband told CNN IBN they were forcibly pulled away.

However, the Rajasthan government has promised action. The Home Minister handed over the case to the Special Operating Group (SOG) and assured coordinated efforts to arrest absconding DIG Madhukar Tandon.

Rajasthan Home Minister Shanti Dhariwal said, “We've handed over the case to SOG.”

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has now promised to step up efforts to arrest not just DIG Tandon but also former-Orissa DG BB Mohanty's son - rape convict Biti Mohanty who jumped parole in December 2008 and has been absconding ever since...

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said that he deemed the case very seriously and that challans and court trials for the accused were already on.

While Devi’s protest demanding justice has been rudely cut short but Rajasthan's Ruchika is hoping that this time the government's assurances have more to them than just hollow words.
