Govt campaigns for measles vaccination

Madurai(Tamil Nadu): The Union Government may start an immunisation campaign similar to pulse polio programme to administer a booster dose of measles vaccine.

Though the measles vaccines are provided free of cost to children in state-run hospitals, the government wants to ensure full coverage through an additional dosage, a top official of the Tamil Nadu Health Department said.

The campaign would commence soon after completion of the ongoing second round of survey across the country, the official, who wished not to be named, said.

The measles vaccine project survey was being supported by the World Health organsation and the Central government.

The Government would allocate the money for the programme after getting the approval of the Parliament.

The surveillance of measles had been added to the pulse polio programme and hospitals were being monitored for infections.
