Govt clears caste-based census from December

New Delhi: Central Government on Wednesday cleared caste-based census. The caste-based census will be done from December 2010 onwards. The decision to carry out caste-based census was taken by a Group of Ministers (GoM) that met in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The GoM headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee considered the views of political parties on the issue before deciding to go ahead with it.

Political parties like the Samajwadi Party, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) have been demanding that caste be included in the census.

Even the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been in favour of including caste in census.

The GoM on caste-based census includes Union Ministers Sharad Pawar, AK Antony, P Chidambaram, Mamata Banerjee, M Veerapa Moily, Farooq Abdullah, Dayanidhi Maran, Kapil Sibal, Mukul Wasnik and Salman Khurshid.
