Mumbai: About 15 lakh Maharashtra government employees went on strike in Mumbai on Thursday in protest of the brutal killing of Additional Collector Yashwant Sonawane in Manmad, Maharashtra.
Government employees in Maharashtra held demonstrations to protest the killing of Additional Collector Yashwanth Sonawane - the officer who was burnt to death on Tuesday allegedly by the kerosene mafia.
The government servants have demanded better protection, a comprehensive probe and strictest possible punishment for Sonawane’s killers.
“Such people should be hanged till death,” said a distraught Maharashtra Government employee. Some others went as far as saying that the killers should also be burnt alive because death sentence would not be enough for the people who have committed such a heinous crime.
But as the state cracks down on the kerosene mafia after the killing, the challenge is to make it a sustained campaign.
The collective anger of the employees forced the state government to respond. The government is now mulling on the use of Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in the case.
“Depending on the previous cases against the accused we’d definitely try and charge them with MCOCA,” said RR Patil, Home Minister, Maharshtra.
The state also seems to have take note of adulteration rackets with the chief minister ordering a crackdown. Raids were conducted across Maharashtra and about 170 arrests were made.
More raids are expected in the days to come and the challenge is to maintain the momentum triggered by this mass protest.
