Click to play videoNew Delhi: The Defence Minister of Pakistan, Ahmad Mukhtaar, on Monday refused to comment on the Pakistan Supreme Court's ruling indicting Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani for contempt of court. "The case is in court and we can't make remarks on this. The President can pardon him and a new prime minister can also be appointed," he said.
Mukhtaar added, "The case (next hearing) is going to start on February 28. We cannot expect early judgement. Our government is following the law and we will explore all options available in the legal framework."
He added that he did not think that the SC was unfair to the ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP) or the government. "I don't think Senate elections will be disturbed by court proceedings," he added.
The Pakistan Supreme Court on Monday indicted Gilani for contempt of court for his apparent failure to act on its repeated orders to revive cases of alleged money laundering against Asif Ali Zardari in Switzerland.
Gilani is the first Pakistan Prime Minister to have been indicted by the SC.
The next hearing in the contempt case against Gilani is on February 22 and the Defence lawyer has been asked to present evidence in court on February 27. Gilani has been exempted from personal appearance in court in the next hearing.
