Mumbai: Two days of tension, sporadic violence, and a strong police presence in Mumbai did not deter these monks from holding fast to their demand.
Their main demand is that the mysterious death of Buddhist monk Bhanta Mahathero be registered as a murder in police records and not as a suicide.
Supporters say that the spiritual guru was murdered since he was opposing a slum rehabilitation project on a land that was meant for a Buddhist shrine.
Bruises found on the monk's body has strengthened their suspicion that foul play was involved.
“How is it possible that a Bhiku who has devoted his life to others would commit suicide at this point?” questioned Bhadanth Mahathero, a Buddhist monk.
The monk's supporters at the JJ Hospital too, refused to accept the monk's body till an assurance was given to them, leaving Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil with no choice but to give in.
“We have registered a case of murder, there will be an inquiry into it and the accused will be dealt with,” said Patil.
With the government caving in, the body was finally moved and last rites have now been conducted.
A case of murder has been registered against four people, one of whom includes the owner of a construction company whom supporters are alleging is behind the monk's death.
