New Delhi: While media has come to play a crucial role in exposing corruption, in India, even this solitary fight on corruption has lost a lot of steam as the political system has simply become immune to such exposes and is too lethargic when it comes to acting on them.
The child trafficking case for instance. CNN-IBN Special Investigation exposed JS Bhasin and his adoption agency Preet Mandir and how it has become a child trafficking racket, minting money by selling babies and children.
These deadly sins would have never been known but for the evidence of the child trafficking racket caught on camera and the documentation painstakingly gathered over six months of investigation.
But even after the expose, Bhasin continues to be a free man. The Pune police simply refuse to take action. The Ministry of Women and Child Development has served a show-cause notice on Preet Mandir on why it shouldn't be closed down permanently.
This is just one instance of government's monumental apathy when it comes to fighting corruption.
When CNN-IBN’s team broke a Rs 3,500-crore scam in Nafed, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar refused to even comment or take any action.
This despite the fact that he had promised in Lok Sabha to institute an enquiry. The state of affairs in Nafed continue to be the same.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh often talks about bureaucratic 'inertia' and that really is the problem.
The Indian political establishment and bureaucracy just cannot and do not want to wake up to corruption.
A CNN-IBN-DIG expose had graphically revealed the extent of criminalisation of politics in Uttar Pradesh and how MLAs from across party lines would do anything for money.
Mehboob Ali, at that time a minister in Mulayam Singh Yadav's Cabinet, was caught on camera agreeing to traffic a consignment of drugs in his official car. But instead of listening to the message, in this case, the messenger was targeted.
