Govt plays moral police, pulls down underwear ads

New Delhi: Indecent, vulgar and suggestive, says the Information & Broadcasting Ministry, as it explains its decision to ban the transmission of two commercials of Amul Macho and Lux cozy underwear.

The raunchy commercial for Amul innerwear has been controversial. In fact, in a poll carried out by our sister network, CNBC TV18, inviting reactions, 53 per cent believed the advertisement was gross and in poor taste while 47 per cent thought it was clutter breaking.

Meanwhile, the agency which made the advertisement - Saints & Warriors - defends itself saying the brief given by the brief makers was to make a splash.

Says Founder, Saints & Warriors, Pushpinder Singh, "We wanted it to be naughty and raunchy and I think it is naughty and raunchy. I don't think it is vulgar. But a lot of people think it is vulgar and they are saying so in loud voices, which again is very good for the brand."

Not so good though, if the moral police is watching. Ask FTV and the channel will tell everyone how it was made to apologise after it was banned for obscenity.

The Advertising Standards Council - the ad world regulators - did receive a number of complaints on the controversial commercial, but found nothing objectionable.

The I&B Ministry though has warned all channels to be careful in future in selection of advertising content.
