New Delhi: A scary warning from the government of India – the worst of the swine flu epidemic is yet to come.
Health Secretary Naresh Dayal said, “Till now it has been under control because of the summer heat but we fear that once the temperature becomes cooler the virus might proliferate.
Anticipating the worst, officials of the Indian Council of Medical Research, WHO and the National Disaster Management Agency met health ministry officials on Saturday.
Senior Specialist, NDMA Vivek Chhabria said, “The swine flu virus is known to cause chest infection. This virus can cause pneumonia too. We will be implementing active surveillance of patients suffering from any kind of chest infection.”
So far 17 cases have been confirmed across the country out of that, nine have now been discharged after recovery.
A 1-1/2-year-old boy tested was positive on Saturday. He is the brother of a 6-year-old girl who had also tested positive on Friday. The two were traveling from New York.
Three other passengers showing swine flu symptoms were quarantined in Bangalore and Chennai. All were returning from the US.
Meanwhile the health minister said that the level six pandemic of the WHO is not applicable for India.
Union Health minister Gulam Nabi Azad said, “There have only been 15 cases in India, the WHO pandemic was not imposed keeping India in mind.”
The government has also asked it's missions abroad to encourage people coming for an Indian visa to get themselves tested for the virus.
