New Delhi: The government has constituted a Group of Ministers (GoM) to tackle the Japanese encephalitis outbreak in the country.
The government has acted after CNN-IBN relentlessly reported on the epidemic, which has claimed the lives of over 500 children in two months.
Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh had rushed to Gorakhpur last month after watching the reports.
Azad at that time said that he would come up with a concrete plan to fight the killer disease.
The convener of the Encephalitis Eradication Programme in Gorakhpur Dr RN Singh welcomed the step and said, "This is a good step by Government of India. But this is not all. We need an Encephalitis eradication programme. We want that it should be declared as a national health emergency."
He also said that the government is taking all these steps only because of the upcoming Uttar Pradesh elections.
