New Delhi: Nearly 10, 000 poultry birds have been culled after a bird flu outbreak in a Manipur village near Imphal.

The infected birds, along with their eggs were culled and thrown into huge pits. They were culled within a radius of five kilometer on Thursday. The operation continued on Friday with intensification of surveillance measures in a radius of 10 km.

Red alert has been sounded in neighbouring Nagaland, Assam and Mizoram. State authorities have intensified surveillance and imposed ban on the import of poultry and pigs and their products from Manipur, Myanmar and Bangladesh.

The government has stepped up the control and containment measures against bird flu and culled nearly 10, 000 birds on Friday.

"On July 26, the second day after the confirmation of outbreak of avian influenza, 9,472 poultry birds were culled, 7,159 eggs destroyed and 450 kg poultry feed material disposed of," an official release said.

The government has increased the number of Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) to 32 as against 21 on Friday in order to control the spread of the virus. The government on Friday confirmed the presence of H5N1 virus.

As many as 22 areas have been identified for culling and proper sanitisation works in the culling zone, it said.

The response teams started their control operations after requisite health check-up by medical teams and under coverage of Tamiflu tablet.

The members of RRTs are fully equipped with personal protection equipment and control operation was carried out as per the guidelines issued by the Centre in identified poultry units and backyard poultry.

Eight areas, four each in East Imphal and West Imphal districts were covered on the second day, the release added.

A control room has been set up at the office of the Directorate of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services at Imphal.
