New Delhi: Roshan Jahan is the latest victim of road rage in Delhi. On Wednesday, she and her husband were beaten up with an iron rod by a minibus driver, when their car almost collided with his vehicle.
Says Roshan Jahan, "we stopped our car and I asked him to move his minibus, but he took a rod and beat us up."
Incidents of road rage have been on the rise in Delhi in recent months. Psychologists say each instance where the culprit goes unpunished makes matters worse.
Says Psychologist Dr Sameer Parikh, "One road rage incident has more chances of causing more road rage incidents purely because it comes into the limelight and somewhere people feel that they can get away with anything."
The Delhi government held a special meeting to discuss the issue on Thursday. Sources say the government now plans to permanently cancel the driving licences of road rage offenders.
Says Delhi Transport Minister, Haroon Yousuf, "We are very concerned about this new trend. A meeting has been called by the Chief Secretary to assess the situation and figure out what measures can be taken by the Transport Department and the traffic police to prevent this."
With the Delhi government turning its attention to the problem of road rage, perpetrators of this menace should watch out. Law enforcement agencies will be cracking down in the future.
