New Delhi: Union Home Minister P Chidambaram is meeting political parties tomorrow to build consensus for a federal investigative agency.
Chidambaram would pitch for a central agency to deal with terrorism, insurgency and cyber crimes.
It will be an autonomous body, probably headed by the prime minister with its own specially trained agents, and its own special courts.
The bottomline is that the government is now finally treating terror as an attack on the country rather than as a mere law and order problem
A meeting of leaders of political parties chaired by Speaker Somnath Chatterjee earlier on Wednesday had decided to take up the issue on Thursday.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi held consultations on the issue with senior party leaders including Pranab Mukherjee, A K Antony and Ahmed Patel in the evening after which Mukherjee had a talk with the Leader of the Opposition L K Advani.
Advani later told PTI that it would be a general discussion in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
He said his party would also raise the issue of Assam violence during the discussion.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi said the government was in favour of structured debate on the issue of terrorism.
"There may be some criticism from some quarters but ultimately it will help the government," he said.
