Govt decides to proritise services

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The Government has decided to privatise many of its services which involve direct interface with the people.

Though the services to be privatised are yet to be identified, broadly, these include those relating to driving licences, payment of taxes and utility bills.

The move, which follows a recommendation, by the Administrative Reforms Commission is likely to promote private competition in services that interface with the public and consumers and is expected to bring down levels of corruption.

A recent meeting of the Core Group on Administrative Reforms chaired by the cabinet secretary took the crucial decision and the department of administrative reforms and public grievances has already issued directives to central ministries and state governments to formulate policies.

The Government wants the “opening up” to progress in a time-bound manner, with quarterly reports to the department on the status of work. It has directed that the first report for the July-September period be sent to the department by October 10.

The Government wants to “open up” these services to the private sector in a phased manner over the next few years, with proper regulatory mechanism in place.
