Sniffer dogs to curb illegal wildlife trade

Ramgarh: The biggest threat to wild animals across the world is trade in endangered wildlife.

Now the animals have some help from their canine counterparts.

Sniffer dogs will be used by wildlife wardens to detect the illegal trade in animal products.

The first batch of dogs that graduated from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (Itbp) Training Centre, trained specifically to identify illegal wildlife trade items, have been brought to serve the purpose.

German shepherd dogs have been specially trained to sniff out wildlife products such as tiger, panther and lion skins, bones, and claws.

Endangered wildlife traffic official Rahul Datta says, “ We have provided the funding and the dogs to ITBP. This is the first such programme. This will give further teeth to the wildlife protection system in the country.”

The dogs are presently undergoing training at the ITBP centre in Ramgarh. They are trained to sniff out explosives, wildlife skins and products, drugs and also to follow trails left by poachers and criminals.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Haryana AK Dar says that the necessity of training dogs was because of the close trade borders of three states.

Animal products from Jammu and Kashmir, Uttrakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab make their way through Haryana on to Delhi and other cities before leaving for destinations abroad.

If found successful more dogs in more states will be trained.
