Govt turns to Harvard to train babus

New Delhi: The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has come up with an idea to excite our bureaucrats to think fresh with courses designed from Harvard University.

So, it's time to dust off the cobwebs and the jaded thinking and inject some fresh ideas into the bureaucracy, or at least that's the plan the Government has for its babus in the New Year.

Government has planned to provide mid career training for them at top business schools in India with courses designed by ivy league colleges.

The refresher course for the first batch of 100 babus is already underway at IIM Ahmedabad.

''We have tied up with IIM Ahmedabad and the course will be prepared by Harvard,'' said Union Minister, DoPT Suresh Pachouri.

This is a shift from the earlier practice of sending just a handful of bureaucrats abroad for training.

Now all of them get global exposure spread across five phases in 28 years of their careers.

Moreover there are also plans to bring in professors from across the globe to teach best global practices.

But the global exposure notwithstanding, this training programme is not going to stop bureaucrats from going abroad on junkets, because as far as they are concerned, the sun of wisdom always rises from the West.
