New Delhi: Koodiyattam, the oldest existing classical theatre based on Ramayana, is dying a slow death as there are few takers for it today.
In an effort to promote the dance form and restore its splendour and popularity, the Government has decided to allot Rs five crore.
Recently, the United Nations Educational Scientific Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) too recognised Koodiyattam as a Human Heritage Art that needs to be reserved and protected.
Koodiyattam had originated much before Kathakali and has survived stiff competition from popular dance forms for more than 2000 years.
"Students are not getting enough chances to perform and those who do want to do just senior roles," says Koodiyattam artist, Kalamandalam Shivan Namboodari.
The Koodittam artists hope to promote the dance forms through workshops, courses and live stage performances.
